Looking out into the World
Italy, August 2019
In a small village on the hills above the lake of Como this elderly couple was looking out into the world, a typical Mediterranean small market square. It was a sunny late afternoon. Some kind of late siesta calmness still laid on the square. The intensive azure, bright blue to white, worn out shutters gave the scene a Mediterranean flair. To me, the colourful shutters reflect implicitly the lake of Como with its finely graduated blue colours and also the white top of the waves, sometimes wild and dangerous, sometimes smooth and calm.
To stay in the frame of Lago di Como with water, waves, coast, beaches and wind, the couple might represent the crew of a ship, captain and sailor; resting in their thoughts, looking melancholy to the horizon and expecting the coastline to appear.
